Console Functions

The console provides the primary user interface for all the features in Mailtraq. It also provides a real time display of Mailtraq's activities and enables all stored messages to be viewed. Also, every Mailtraq feature which is configured via property dialogs can be accessed via the console.

Console Versions
In late 2009 Mailtraq introduced a new Console (see below) based on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) for use with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows 2008, in addition to the Traditional Console for NT/XP/2003.

Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows 2008 users must use the newer MMC version of Mailtraq. The new installer can also be used on NT/XP/2003 machines.
If you wish to transition and existing installation from the Traditional Mailtraq interface to the new MMC based version you may do so by uninstalling and reinstalling using the new download generally following the procedure here...

Use the new Console with an existing Mailtraq
You may also use the new Console with an existing Mailtraq from build 2832 onwards.
The method is detailed lower down this page here...

Traditional Console
The Traditional Console, illustrated below, is suitable for use with version of Windows up to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The Traditional Console uses a plain system-tray icon.

Opening and Closing the Console
Mailtraq's console is normally a hidden window but can be displayed by selecting Mailtraq Console from the drop down menu of the Mailtraq icon in the System Tray or simply by double-clicking on that icon. The console may also be displayed by clicking on the console loader shortcut in the Mailtraq folder installed in the Start Menu (or by its shortcut key Ctrl+Alt+M There may be a short delay), or by launching the Mailtraq Console applet in Control Panel. The console can be removed from the desktop without affecting Mailtraq's activities in any way by choosing Close Console from the File Menu in the console.

This view of the Console shows the Service Manager* opened ready to Add a new Service)

MMC Console
The MMC Console (after 2.15.2.2788), illustrated below, is suitable for use with newer versions of Windows: Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The MMC Console system-tray icon indicates whether or not the MMC Console is connected to the Mailtraq Service. It also gives access to the Mailtraq Monitor tools. If the system-tray icon is not displayed when expected you may run the Mailtraq Monitor program from Windows Start | Programs.

Opening and Closing the Console

This version of Mailtraq uses the standard Windows MMC service snap-in control.

The Mailtraq Console is normally accessed by right-clicking the Mailtraq icon in the System Tray, by the clock.

Run the Mailtraq Monitor program after installation if the management console icon does not automatically appear.

Using the MMC Console with a Traditional Mailtraq

Download the WiX/MMC version of Mailtraq from the Latest Releases page, and run the installer.
Select the Custom option:

Then, when asked which program features you wish to install, select only the Mailtraq Console.

and then complete the Wizard.

You can then access the Console from Windows Start | All Programs at the Mailtraq Entry

Configuration Tips

Console Menus
In addition to the standard menus in the console, a Commands menu can be created containing custom menu entries. The Commands menu can be configured to contain many of the menu entries which appear on other console menus. The Commands menu is created and edited in the Custom Menu Tab of the Customise the Toolbar dialog, accessed by selecting Customise... from the View menu. Full details of the menus are available in the program Help.

Configure Columns
The column headings in the right-pane can be customized to provide more information or to allow you to change the order of the columns by selecting View | Configure Columns, which will open the 'Configure Visible Fields' dialog. The example shown is for the Outgoing Mail (the  Outbox).

The items in this dialog can be moved freely by drag and drop, or by clicking on the arrowed buttons, to and from the Available Fields and Fields to Display areas to determine which columns are displayed for the currently selected object in the List View. The order of the column display can also be set by moving selected entries by drag and drop or by clicking on Move Up and Move Down.

*Service Manager: This dialog is opened from Options | Services . The Service Manager dialog, accessed by selecting Services... from the Options menu is used to configure the core services running on Mailtraq.
